How to Compost Chicken Litter

Follow this step-by-step guide to turn chicken manure into nutrient-rich soil for your garden!

Collect Chicken Manure. Collect coop bedding and dump into compost pile or bin. Carbon to Nitrogen Balance. Follow the rule of 1 part Carbon (browns) to 2 parts Nitrogen (greens) to allow microbes to break down organic material.Turn Your Pile into Compost. Combine the correct ratio of bedding and manure, add water, then turn the compost. The material should be about as wet as a well-wrung sponge to produce a hot pile. Allow the compost pile be heated to 130-150 degrees Fahrenheit and maintain that temperature for 3 days. Add Coop to Garden to speed up the breakdown of chicken litter in your compost.Repeat Heating Process. Turn compost pile once every 10 days to optimize microbial activity. Let it Cure. Monitor the pile. Once all the contents have been heated, loosely cover and let cure. It’s ready when most material is dark, crumbly and sweet-smelling like soil.Add to Garden. Congratulations!
